World Science Day!

World Science Day!

World Science Day is celebrated on the 10th of November every year. The theme for this year’s World Science Day was ‘Basic Sciences for Sustainable Development.
Did you know that children absorb and understand the concepts of science naturally from a very young age? The very reason why they throw things is their way of understanding the idea of gravity! Yes, you heard it right. They realize that whatever they are throwing is not going up but is being pulled down. Similarly, they form an understanding of sound, temperature, textures, and so on.

Right choices towards sustainability!

Considering this year’s theme, you can help your child make some right choices such as,

● Taking a cloth bag for grocery shopping
● Talking to them about wet waste and dry waste
● Using the back side of printed papers for their scribbling

If you follow such sustainable practices with your child at home, do let us know in the comments!

Let’s try out some experiments!

Science experiments need not happen only in labs or research centers! Your preschoolers are all junior scientists who are capable of conducting safe and child-friendly scientific experiments! Here are a few suggestions from our side that you

1. Instant Snow

You will need:
200-300 gm of Baking Soda
Water
One clean bowl

Direct your child to put the baking soda into the clean bowl.
Add water little by little.
Your child can mix the same to make instant snow!

This is a super easy experiment that your child can do.

2. Magic Milk

You will need:
1 cup milk
2-3 Food colors
Few drops of dish wash
1-2 Cotton buds
A clean plate

Pour the milk on the plate.
Add a few drops of food color at random spots.
Dip the cotton bud in dish wash.
Place the cotton bud on the drops of food color and see the magic!

This is such an amazing process to watch! Children love it!

3. Color Cabbage

You will need:
Cabbage leaves
A cup of water
Food color

In a cup of water add your child’s favorite food color.
Mix it well and keep it aside.
You may use one or more colors in different cups.
Take two large cabbage leaves and place them in the cup.
You can see how the leaves change their color!

This is a great way to show capillary action! Children can imagine how water flows from the roots to every part of a plant.

4. Water Walking

What you will need:
3 containers/glasses with clear water
3 Containers, each with different food color water
Paper towels/tissue papers

Place the containers alternatively with clear water and colored water.
Use the paper towels to connect these containers, in such a way that their ends are submerged in their respective containers.
Your child can observe how the colored water walks over the bridges to clear water.

Your child gets first-hand experience with the magic of capillarity!

5. Ice Cream in a Bag

What you will need:
1 tbsp of sugar
½ cup of milk
3-4 drops of vanilla extract
½ cup of salt
4 cups of ice cubes
1 large ziplock
1 small ziplock

Pour the milk into the small ziplock along with sugar and vanilla extract.
Close the ziplock, and make sure it’s closed properly!
In the big ziplock add the ice cubes and salt and close it.
Now you can ask your child to wear oven mitts or wrap the packet in a thick towel and shake the packet for 5 mins.
By the end, you will get yummy homemade ice cream!

An experiment in which you get to eat!
Now, which one are you going to try out this weekend?! Drop a comment!
