Colours & Children

How do colours impact your child’s development?

Did you know that colours have an impact on the emotional well-being of children, especially when they’re in their early years?

Young parents are often faced with confusing colours when it comes to picking the suitable colour for their children.

Here are a few guiding tips to keep in mind while picking the colour of the nursery, the toys or the outfits.

Infants (0-2 years):

This is the time where your baby will be growing at an astounding rate. In this period, your child would not be able to distinguish between colours, but they can figure out contrasts between two shades. Be it the sleeping cot or the nursery walls, always choose soft and warm colours that are ideal for stimulating their visual development and learning. Tones like green will help keep your baby calm, while pink has a sedative effect. Blue tones help soothe your baby while beige provides a sense of warmth & comfort.

Pre-schoolers (3-6 years):

The preschool environment is a crucial period for your baby. Your child will start playing with colours, discover painting/drawing and learn to explore the surroundings. The choice of colour around your child is important as it stimulates bodily functions, minds and even their moods. In this stage, pre-school goers usually start picking out colours that they are drawn to. It is best to surround them with warm hues of red, orange and yellow. A quick look at their drawing books will also give you an idea on colours they resonate with. Combinations of primary colours along with blue or green tones help inspire your child with curiosity and, at the same time, comfort them physiologically and psychologically.

School Going Kids (6-9 years):

School going children would have formed definite opinions about their preferred colours. As they enter and grow through primary school, their world and sense of possibilities expand. They develop new knowledge, likes, dislikes and skills. At this stage, colours are associated with learning progress, attention span and sleep quality. Try to accommodate their opinions while choosing new home decor or furniture. According to research, well-planned spaces with favourable colours help improve a child’s academic interests. Lighter shades of blue and green are known to have positive impacts on overall growth and development of children in this age group.

However, there is no hard and fast rule to pick colours that would work for all children. As children grow, colours become a medium to express their thoughts, emotions and moods. Being a parent, spend time with your child and explore different colours, textures and shades together. This would nudge their development in the right direction and also help you pick out the next outfit with ease!
